Valley of the waters day hike

type:
walk
rating:
2 - good
difficulty:
1 - very easy

Location

Wenthworth Falls, NSW
Australia

A short 2-3 hour walk suitable for the whole family. This is a classic Blue Mountains walk. You start at the conservation hut where you can park (and get ice cream after the walk). The unfit among us will make it, but be tired at the end of the day.

My tip is make sure you go past the main water fall empress falls (watch out for canyoneers during summer) to see the cascades and other views.

Hi Geoff
If you want to stretch this walk out a bit, there is a nice little circuit that continues down from Empress Falls to Vera Falls, Jamison Creek, Hippocrene Falls and back up to the base of Wentworth Falls. Then you can follow the Wentworth Pass track (or an alternate route like the National Pass track) back to Valley of the Waters and return to Conservation Hut. The track is a bit vague at times (and half of it isn't on the CMA Katoomba map). It also has a few very small scrambly bits, but that just means the tourists don't go down there (there is a sign warning that only parties with an experienced navigator should take that route). It's a lovely little half-day walk though, and only took me a little over 3 hours to do the complete circuit (start/finish at Conservation Hut). It probably wouldn't be suitable for the kids / those without an adequate level of fitness...but that's what makes it so nice - I didn't see a soul once I got past the National Pass intersection. Be prepared to brush away a lot of spider webs if no one else has been through that day!
Total walk length = 5km, 580m ascent.
