How to catch yabbies - for food or bait

I'm a pretty hopeless fisher. I've got all the gear but rarely catch anything. My favourite line from a John Williamson song goes, "Workin' hard at bein' lazy, no bait on the line". If you ever see a post from me about catching fish - ignore any advice given. But I can catch yabbies. And the kids had a great time doing it.

How to make a cheap and fool proof yabbie trap

My father-in-law has been at it again. This time with a you- beaut yabbie trap.

He says; "This little shrimp or yabbie trap has always worked for me."

Here's the instructions:

  • Find a length of 100mm PVC pipe around 500mm
  • Cut a hole approx 90mm x 200mm to access bait and yabbies (Wal uses an angle grinder)
  • Cut lid section from another section of the same size PVC pipe, approx 300mm long by 250mm round
  • Cut slots with angle grinder as in photo to allow water to drain
  • Cut funnel section from plastic drink containers and cut thread section off funnel piece
  • Drill holes through funnel and pipe to tie in place with twine, copper wire or cable ties
  • Tie the spring section of a rat trap in bottom of trap
  • Attach long length of rope (as per photo) to trap. A float attached to rope is also a good idea if rope should become untied from the bank
  • When travelling a piece of sunlight soapĀ is excellent bait, an old fish head good also
  • Cheap and ready for lots of shrimps and small yabbies
