Survival skills or keeping up with Jones?

Check out this quote:

One of the joys of camping is to wander through the site and discover the latest devices to enable your family to live on holiday exactly as they do at home.

Surely this can't be true! Has camping shifted from an affordable holiday based on your resources and skill to a consumer race in which those with the big bucks are the heroes?
